BASILDON’S deputy council leader says a 5,000 seat arena will be the town’s answer to The O2 in London.

Kerry Smith said it’ll be a huge asset to the town.

Earlier this month, Labour leader Gavin Callaghan announced ambitions plans for the South Essex Arena.

Mr Smith said: “We will be making a big public announcement in March.

“We need private sector investment and that will help draw big names and performers.

“We are in a good location and travelling around London is a nightmare so people would use this arena.

“People in some areas worry about getting to and from London so it’ll be easier for them.

“If we do nothing the town centre will continue to be dead.

“As part of a whole town centre plan, we are looking at parking and the road network.

“There will be a consultation and it’ll be something startling.”

Council bosses are keeping tight-lipped about costs and more detailed information on the ambitions project.

But campaigners say there are too many questions about the plans

John James, 82, former chairman of the Five Links Residents Association, said: “It’s all too pie in the sky. We’ve got a good theatre and cinema.

“We want to see shops and homes in the town.

“We need to see flats that can be rented and more shops.

“I want to see the town centre as it used to be 15 years ago.

“I think a few other residents would also agree with me.”

Laindon resident Pat Rackley, 70, said: “The arena plan is the biggest load of rubbish I have ever heard.

“What will happen to the council offices, the theatre and the parking issue?

“People have told me they are all thinking the same about this.”
