A SHOP worker from Southend has been featured on a Mother’s Day card shipping across the country for Cancer Research UK.

Dawn Matthews, who works in the Southend Tesco Extra store, has had her personal story and photograph included on a card designed by Hallmark.

It is hoped the card and Dawn’s story will connect with and support other people affected by the disease this Mother’s Day on March 31.

The card is now on sale in Tesco stores throughout the country.

Dawn will also be running in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, taking place on May 12 in various locations across the country, of which Tesco is a partner.

This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone – women, men and children – to join the Race for Life events, a series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research.

Dawn said: “I’ve decided to complete the Race for Life this year in memory of my dear Nan Joy, who was taken from us in December 2017, after losing her battle with cancer.

“She was a strong, brave lady who went through all the difficult treatments over the previous two years in a bid to battle this disease.

“I and the rest of the family are devastated, but I’ve decided to turn that into something positive and raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK.

“Hopefully this will help more research, support and treatment for cancer patients so no one has to go through what we did losing a loved one.”

The Mother’s Day cards are on sale in large Tesco stores until March 31.
