SOUTHEND'S pier has been closed due to high winds today, with the Met Office issuing a weather warning.

Southend Pier, along with the Cliff Life and Pier Hill lift, have all been closed for the day due to extremely high winds.

Additionally, the Southend Pier Marathon, organised by Sussex Trail Events and due to take place today, has been cancelled.

Southend Council confirmed the news on social media this morning.

The Qe2 bridge at the Dartford Crossing on the M25 has also been shut.

Adventure Island UK, on Western Esplanade, also confirmed it will not be open today.

In a statement on Facebook it said: "Unfortunately, due to the strong winds and dangerous conditions, Adventure Island will not be opening today, Sunday 10th March 2019.

"Adventure Inside will be open between 11am and closing at 6pm.

"We apologise for any disappointment caused."

Essex Police said they have been receiving a high number of calls due to the extreme winds.

A spokesman said: "We are experiencing extremely high call demand due to the weather.

"Please travel where absolutely necessary and ensure 999 is used only for genuine emergencies.

"Use 101 for non-emergencies. Thanks for your patience."
