SPORTY youngsters were treated to a visit from their group’s furry, friendly mascot to teach them about the joys of sport.

Mini Athletics, run by Amanda Vancliff, hosts athletic sessions in Basildon and Thurrock every week for children aged between two and seven years old.

On Saturday, the children were visited by Gogo the Gazelle, mascot for Mini Athletics, during their session at the Palmers College in Grays.

Halstead Gazette:

Gogo encouraged the children during the classes which teach them the basic athletic movement skills of running, jumping, crawling and throwing in a structured, yet playful format.

Mini Athletics hosts the weekly classes on Sundays in Basildon Sporting Village and in Palmers College and Cowdray Hall in Grays on Fridays and Saturdays.

Halstead Gazette:

Ms Vancliff, who started the south Essex classes in September, said: “The session went very well on Saturday and the children really benefitted from having Gogo there to spur them on and get them introduced to the idea of athletic movement.

“Mini Athletics offers the fun and safe environment for these young kids to develop motor, cognitive and social skills through the medium of athletics.

Halstead Gazette:

“We teach very basic technique for athletic development, such as the use of both arms, two-footed jumps and throwing correctly."
