SERIOUS concerns have been raised about a bogus caller who is bothering residents and churches begging for cash.

The man claims to have been released from Southend Hospital and wants money for a taxi back to Benfleet.

He is knocking on doors and visiting St. Peter’s Church, Eastbourne Grove, Southend asking for the money.

A neighbourhood watch was created in the Carlingford Drive area following the issue.

He has been described as white, tall, slim and unshaven.

A spokesman for the neighbourhood watch said: "He disrupted a quiz night at the church last Saturday.

"He is very persistent. He wears, what looks like, a hospital wristband.

"Unfortunately some have given him money just to get rid of him.

"He has a sob story and is a scammer. I am concerned for the elderly residents who may be more trusting. We were going to deliver notices to homes in the area reminding people not to open their front door to strangers.

"He has entered some homes and sat in people's houses refusing to leave until they give him the money he wants.

"He has been seen about seven times in the last week or so.

"I think we in the community need to get together to support each other, I am able to stand up for myself but it is the elderly residents who I now will give him money."

He went into the St. Peter’s Church, Eastbourne Grove, Southend on Oct 16 asking for money and would not accept a lift and the church took the decision to give him £30.
