A south Essex primary school pupil has tested positive for coronavirus, it has been confirmed.

The youngster at Blenheim Primary School in Leigh has tested positive for the virus - school leaders confirmed. 

A spokesman said: "We were informed by a parent yesterday morning that one of our pupils has tested positive for coronavirus, after developing symptoms on Friday evening. 

"We immediately acted in line with our risk assessment, implemented all of the required procedures and sought guidance from Public Health England.

"Those children and staff who had been in close contact with the child concerned have been contacted directly as they will need to self isolate for 14 days. 

"We remain open for all other pupils at the school and are committed to ensuring that the school environment is as safe as possible for pupils, parents and staff."
