FIREFIGHTERS were called to a fire where four large trees and six fence panels had caught alight.

Crews were called to Littlefield Road, in Shrub End, at around 2.30am on Monday.

On arrival they found four conifer trees and six panels of fencing had gone up in flames.

Residents had gathered round to watch the fire service work at the scene.

Firefighters worked for 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which took place near to the old doctor's surgery off Layer Road.

The trees have been severely damaged by the fire and the fencing has also been destroyed.

The cause of the blaze has been recorded by Essex Fire Service as unknown.
