VILLAGERS are calling for a sign which they find offensive to be taken down immediately.

A sign reading 'All Lives Matter' outside of The Anchor, in Mistley, has sparked outrage among residents.

Graham Sharp, of High Street, Mistley, is appealing for the landlord of the facility to remove the sign in the name of "decency, sensitivity and solidarity".

He said: "The 'All Lives Matter' sign outside The Anchor pub shames Mistley.

"People with white privilege have the security of knowing their lives will not be cut short, ruined or adversely affected because of the colour of their skin.

"This is not to deny the existence of other forms of discrimination but grievances about other issues should not be used to undermine the Black Lives Matter campaign or to detract from the pernicious effects of racism."

Halstead Gazette:

The sign was installed following recent anti-racism protests across the country, in solidarity with American campaigners for Black Lives Matter.

The protests against racial inequality and police brutality took place after the death of American George Floyd, who died after being knelt on by a police officer during an arrest.

Demonstrations with hundreds of people have taken place as locally as Castle Park in Colchester.

Another Mistley resident, who asked not to be named, said the sign outside The Anchor is tarnishing the area.

He said: "It has already been defaced several times.

"I, and many others in the village, find it truly offensive."

The pub has been contacted by the Standard for a comment.
