A PLUCKY schoolgirl has been hailed a “superhero in disguise” for her amazing positive attitude throughout the coronavirus lockdown.

Emily Johnson, 11, has been going to school throughout the pandemic because both of her parents are key workers.

Her mum is the manager of a care home on the Dengie and her dad is a delivery driver.

Emily’s school – Maylandsea Primary – closed on March 30 and started sharing a site with Purleigh School so Emily has been going there with children she didn’t know.

But the Year Six student didn’t let that dampen her spirits.

Maylandsea Primary headteacher Clare James said: “Emily has been amazing during lockdown.

“For one so young, she has shown what a wonderful young lady she is.

“Over that time, Emily began to shine. She would organise games of bingo for all the children, she would read stories to the younger children, make up dance routines for them to learn and help out with whatever was asked of her.

“After school, she would take gifts to her friends.

“At Easter she gave sweets and around VE Day she made cakes and treats to share out.

“Since being back at Maylandsea School, Emily has remained in the key worker group even though her Year Six cohort have been in school.

“She has not complained, she has followed the guidance and continued to be a star.

“She continues to help the younger children feel at ease about coming into school, she prepares and reads stories and, of course, holds the now famous daily bingo.”

Teacher Kim Dobson said: “As a teacher, I have never before come across a child so deserving of recognition.

“Emily was a lovely child in my class before lockdown – I didn’t realise she was also a superhero in disguise.”
