A LONGING for a return to normality and capturing the feeling of escapism were central themes explored by two artists as part of a nationwide exhibition.

Pieces by Lily Goodey, 17, and Charlotte Cater, 18, students at Colchester Sixth Form College, feature as part of an online exhibition which aim to capture the difficulties of life in lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic.

The exhibition, titled At Home, features artwork and photographs created by 140 students from 46 colleges.

Lily, from Colchester, who titled her painting 'Nick via the Internet', said: "Initially I was inspired by the concept of coverings as this was the title for my original project.

"As lockdown came around and time in isolation progressed, this influenced my painting, which I think now could be seen as a projection of hope and longing to return to normality.

"It serves as a reminder of the times spent in college with friends before lockdown, and holds an importance to me because of this."

Charlotte, from Tiptree, titled her work 'Escape' said, "I was inspired for my piece by deciding to use the lock down time to read the many books I have in my room.

"I wanted to evoke the feeling of escapism and release from the stress of lockdown.

"The piece to me means a way to focus and have a sense of familiarity as I am continuing painting while not being in my art lessons."

The exhibition has been co-ordinated by the Sixth Form Colleges Association (SFCA).

Bill Watkin, SFCA chief executive, said: "At home highlights the extraordinary artistic talent that exists in our sector.

"We are holding this exhibition to recognise and celebrate excellence in sixth form colleges, but also to stimulate our thinking about the world this summer.

"It is imperative that we keep the arts in education secure and flourishing.

"If young people are to make a valuable contribution to society - even if they are to be successful scientists, engineers, doctors and technicians - they need to develop their creative skills, their artistic sensitivities and their ability to interact with others.

"All of this will be more important than ever in the post-Covid world”.
