A STRICT ban will be put in place in a bid to stop visitors to a beauty spot clogging up a road and parking dangerously.

A temporary ‘red route’, typically reserved for the most important roads in London, will be introduced in Broman’s Lane, Mersea.

The zero tolerance order bans cars from stopping in the road at any time.

It has been deemed necessary by Essex County Council as the authority looks to improve road safety and prevent problematic parking.

Cases of unsafe parking and road obstructions have been on the rise during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Motorists have been clogging up the road as they look to access the nearby Cudmore Grove Country Park.

Red routes, which are marked by double red lines, were first introduced in London more than ten years ago.

They ban drivers from parking dangerously on the road, verges and in lay-bys, and prohibit stopping, loading or unloading, and getting out of or into vehicles.

The order is temporary and will allow Essex County Council to keep tabs on the situation in Broman’s Lane for 18 months.

If the authority deems there is a need to amend the ban or make it permanent, a public consultation will take place.

The North Essex Parking Partnership (NEPP) will put the order in place from Monday, June 29, with the red lines set to be painted next week.

Robert Mitchell, deputy highways boss at Essex County Council and chairman of the NEPP, said: “We understand that this is an incredibly difficult time for everyone and that people are keen to drive to enjoy outdoor spaces, like the country park.

“This has however, caused problematic parking along Broman’s Lane and this temporary measure will prevent parked vehicles from obstructing the road. It will ensure clear and safe road access for all users, including residents, visitors and emergency vehicles.”

Mike Lilley, Colchester councillor responsible for public safety, said the scheme is supported by residents.

“This temporary red route is necessary to address the current issue and improve road safety and access,” he said.

“The measure has local support and we encourage motorists to park legally, considerately and safely and make use of nearby car parks.”

The red lining for this TRO will be installed next week.

The traffic regulation order will be in place from June 29.
