A DOG rescuer says she “couldn’t be more grateful” after it was announced she is in the running to be crowned Employee of the Year.

Stacey Sheppard, an animal care assistant at the National Animal Welfare Trust, in Clacton, has been shortlisted for a national award.

She has worked within the kennels for the past five years and could receive the animal charity employee of the year gong at this year’s Petplan and ADCH Animal Charity Awards.

Stacey said: “For me, I have the best job in the world and, although it’s often a rollercoaster of emotions, I couldn’t feel luckier to be involved in rescue each and every day.

“Dogs are a huge part of my world and my life is richer for it.

“To help those in their time of need is an incredible honour.

“So to even receive a nomination for my work, let alone be shortlisted, is the icing on a pretty great cake.

“I couldn’t be more grateful and shocked for the kind recognition.”

Isabella von Mesterhazy, Petplan’s head of marketing, said: “The awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise the hard work and dedication of animal charity staff, teams, and volunteers who’ve gone that extra mile to help rescue and rehome animals in need.

“It was fantastic to receive so many inspirational nominations and we’re looking forward to celebrating with all of our worthy finalists.

“It’s also an opportunity to say thank you to all of those in the animal charity sector who’ve continued to look after animals in need during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Now in their eighth year, the awards recognise the remarkable work carried out by animal charities and not-for-profit organisations across the UK.

In light of the current situation the awards ceremony will take place virtually with actor and animal charity supporter Anthony Head hosting the proceedings.

The winners will be announced during the ceremony on June 18 at 8.30pm on Facebook at PetplanUK.
