Firefighters tackled a massive fire at a popular beauty spot in Colchester.

Several crews were at the scene of the fire, which is burning on part of Middlewick Ranges, off Mersea Road, this evening.

The Wick, as it is affectionately known, is a Ministry of Defence firing range but is also a popular walking spot for residents of Colchester.

Councillor Dave Harris, who lives nearby, said: "It is a terrible thing to happen to the wildlife living there and I feel for my neighbours who are seeing it.

"The firemen are at risk as well. If it is a deliberate act I am appalled."

Essex Police were also at the scene and advised residents to avoid the area.
