MALDON’s biggest event has been cancelled due to coronavirus concerns.

The Maldon Mud Race, which attracts hundreds of runners every year to cross the river Blackwater, will not proceed this year.

A statement from organisers said: “We have been monitoring closely the developments relating to the spread of COVID-19 and taking note of updates and advice issued by the UK Government, the World Health Organisation and other UK public bodies.

“This week the Government is expected to release advice that all mass events should be postponed or cancelled to slow or prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“There are many mass events which have been similarly affected, including the London Marathon, sporting fixtures and musical performances.

“With this advice in mind, the 2020 Maldon Mud Race has been cancelled.

“As per our terms and conditions, runners can choose to transfer their entries to the 2021 race.

“If you were due to be exhibiting or have generously sponsored the event, we will be contacting you shortly.”
