A NEW group which was formed for the upkeep of Maldon Cemetery had its first meeting.

The Friends of Maldon Cemetery are working with Maldon District Council to restore, develop, improve and promote of the cemetery.

The meeting was held in the chapel with Councillor Stephen Nunn setting the scene with a historical overview of the cemetery, followed by representatives of the Friends of Heybridge Cemetery, sharing their experience of creating the group.

Councillor Carlie Mayes also attended the first meeting.

She said: “All those who came along were eager to be involved and work in partnership with the council to ensure that Maldon Cemetery is maintained to the highest standard and is a respectful and peaceful place.”

The group will be holding a clean-up event this Saturday.

They will meet at the chapel at 10am for two hours to tidy up after recent storms Ciara, Dennis and Jorge.

Volunteers should wear wellies and gloves.
