AN active basketball player is on a mission to get more girls involved in the sport.

Cat Sadler, 30, has been announced an ambassador for Basketball England’s All Girls campaign to increase opportunities for women and girls to get involved in basketball- either via playing, coaching, officiating or volunteering.

As an All Girls ambassador, Cat will aim to drive female participation in basketball in Colchester and surrounding areas to help unearth the next generation of basketball stars.

One of 80 ambassadors, Cat has been recruited by the national governing body to be part of the ground-breaking programme, designed to increase female participation and tackle under-representation by young women.

Cat’s involvement in the sport extends outside of the court, as she delivers voluntary basketball sessions to kids in the area, offers training to PE staff from schools and acts as a table official for Essex Rebel junior basketball teams.

She said by being an ambassador she hopes she can bring basketball to all those who have not had the opportunity to try it.

Cat added: “It’s important we support initiatives like this, to not only build the fan base and increase participation but to encourage young women and girls to become involved in sport and live a healthy lifestyle.”

The ambassador programme aims to support Basketball England’s overall vision of nurturing the female game, creating a lifelong affinity with the sport, whilst shining a spotlight on the role models.

Stuart Kellett, director of England Basketball said they know there is a lack of awareness of the sport among women and young girls.

He added: “Our All Girls Ambassadors will be shouting from the rafters in their area, positioning the game in a way that speaks directly to them.

“We hope this ground-breaking programme will showcase the numerous ways that all women and girls can be part of this amazing sport.”
