A TEENAGER from Tiptree has been banned from driving for a year after losing control of his car and crashing into a crowd of onlookers at a cruising event.

Essex Police launched an investigation after the incident on Boxing Day last year on Colchester’s Severalls Industrial Estate, in which three people were hurt.

Footage posted online of the meeting, which was being filmed on a drone, showed a car driving around the bend in the road where several businesses are based.

The driver – Edward Roblin – looked to be attempting a “drift” manoeuvre which sees the car’s tyres momentarily leave the road as they negotiate the corner.

The car then disappeared out of shot before bystanders are seen rushing around to try to help the people who were seemingly hurt in the incident.

It is understood another car was clipped in the incident.

Roblin, 19, admitted dangerous driving at Colchester Magistrates’ Court in November.

Sentencing him at Chelmsford Crown Court, Judge Patricia Lynch QC handed him a 12-month ban.

He will also have to pass an extended driving test when his ban ends before being allowed on the roads again.

Roblin will also be unable to attend car cruising events after being given a curfew banning him from leaving his home in Grove Road, Tiptree, between 8pm and 6am for the next three months,

At the time of the incident, a police spokesman said: “Two women, both aged 20 and from the Halstead area, and a 20-year-old man from Clacton, were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.”

Car cruising events on the business park have been criticised by councillors and plans have been drafted to install speed bumps in a bid to deter petrolheads.

Police have used dispersal orders on the estate to try to deter problem drivers when they are informed about meets.

The get-tough legislation allows them to move people on if they are committing anti-social behaviour.
