A COLOURFUL carnival complete with costumes, decorated floats and "big heads" returned to Harwich last weekend.

Harwich's Guy Carnival returned to the streets of the town for its 165th year anniversary last Saturday.

The ever popular carnival saw the town's residents dress in scary costumes and wear "big heads".

The parade, which involves floats with witty slogans on them, aimed to poke fun at the big issues in the town, assembled in Dovercourt and ended in West Street, Harwich.

A Guy Carnival Spokesman said: "The judges were impressed by so many very young people joining in the carnival in spite of the rain and drizzle - the Tiny Rugby Club blew their whistles from start to finish.

"The Parkeston Scouts were unable to borrow a trailer this year but joined in the carnival anyway.

"They paraded along with the floats."

She said about 50 "big heads" were loaned out, and mainly borrowed by young people.

She added: "The Wrabness Sub-Standard Group were fantastic as hyperactive ostriches."
