A SCHOOLBOY, who saved his mum’s life when she blacked out behind the wheel of her car, has been crowned runner up in a prestigious awards ceremony.

Ben Hedger, ten, received the runner-up accolade in the global hearing specialist’s Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons 2019 in the Young Hero category.

The youngster, who attended Chase Lane Primary School, in Dovercourt, and lived in Colchester before moving away, received his award from His Royal Highness, the Duke of Kent, at a ceremony in London.

Ben said: “All of the finalists were special people and all were real heroes and it was a privilege to be amongst them.”

Ben leapt into action when their Ford Ka went out of control on the A120 after his mum Lauren Smith passed out.

Ben steered the car on to a grass verge and put the hazard warning lights on.

He was just eight years old at the time of the incident.
