PLANS for 'grab' rails to a ticket office entrance have been sent to Tendring Council.

A planning application for two rails at the entrance door of the Ha'Penny Ticket Office, in Harwich, for elderly residents has been submitted to the council's planning portal.

The design and access statement said: "It has become apparent many elderly users and those with some kind of physical impairment cannot negotiate the significant existing step to the entrance door of the ticket office.

"This step, overall rises, is in excess of 240mm which exceeds the maximum rise permitted under building regulations.

"Attempts have been made to reduce the impact of this rise by introducing a temporary step.

"However, this has not overcome the overriding issue and members of the public continue to suffer as they struggle to enter the internal space of the ticket office."

The property is Grade two listed and within the Harwich Conservation Area.

The finish given to the rails will be of an aged brass effect.

Tendring Council will have the final say on the plans.
