A COMMUNITY centre has officially opened its doors to provide help in building confidence and improving mental wellbeing.

The Harwich and Dovercourt Hub, in High Street, Dovercourt, was opened by James Bettley, the High Sheriff of Essex last Thursday.

The centre was created by Community Voluntary Services Tendring to offer a vibrant, central and safe place for people to meet, get involved in community activities, to volunteer, and to enhance the feelings of wellbeing.

Mr Bettley said: “This hub shows what can be achieved when local authorities, charities, business partners and volunteers work together.

“It is truly a community effort, one which has the potential to make an enormous difference to the wellbeing of all who live and work in Dovercourt and Harwich.

“Many congratulations to all those who have worked so hard to get to this point”.

Brenda Ellis, chairman of the community hub, said: “This positive, vibrant hub, used by all ages, cultures and abilities has been achieved with significant funding from the Colchester Catalyst Charity, a large contribution from our reserves, and with the collaborative support of Harwich Town Council, Tendring Council, Essex County Council and Harwich and Dovercourt Rotary Club.

“Our profound thanks go to all our funders, our volunteers and our supporters and also to our dedicated staff team.”

Holly Leach and Maisie Leach, who are part of the Harwich Sing, entertained the audience with a duet for the opening.

More than 50 invited guest, funders and supporters attended the opening, where Dan Land, chairman of Tendring Council, praised the centre and its volunteers for their commitment and energy.

Nicola Vella, volunteer manager for the hub, was presented with a certificate of recognition, awarded to the centre’s volunteers as a token of appreciation.

The High Sheriff of Essex said the hard work and service made a valuable contribution to the life of the community and to the county of Essex.

The activities at the centre range from gentle exercise classes, friendship groups and weight management.
