I WAS surprised to read the letter from Cllr Martin Goss (Gazette, September 16, "Colchester' Unity Candidate") in which he criticises me for my position on Brexit.

I make no apology whatsoever for consistently voting to deliver on the result of the 2016 Referendum, a referendum in which the majority in Colchester voted to leave.

I voted to leave the EU but regardless of my own personal view, I am a democrat to my core and pledged to work to deliver on the result, regardless of what it was.

Cllr Goss’s Party, the Lib Dems, on the other hand, have declared themselves the "Stop Brexit Party" and have pledged to revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU.

It was the late Paddy Ashdown, former Lib Dem leader, who said: “I will forgive no one who doesn’t accept the sovereign voice of the British people once it has spoken.

"Whether it’s a majority of 1 per cent or 20 per cent when the British people have spoken you do what they command.

"Either you believe in democracy or you don’t.”

I couldn’t agree more but the Lib Dems under Jo Swinson have given up on democracy and couldn’t care less what the people of Colchester think.

I have watched the Lib Dems in Parliament consistently block, frustrate, delay and ultimately try to stop Brexit.

I, on the other hand, believe in democracy and have never forgotten, nor will I ever forget that I serve at the pleasure of you, the people of Colchester and that is why I will continue to do all in my power to ensure we leave the European Union in line with the mandate I was given.
