ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners have thanked Harwich and Manningtree residents for signing a petition to stop increased deforestation of the Amazon.

Harwich Peninsula Friends of the Earth thanked local residents for signing an online petition demanding the EU and UN to halt deforestation of the Amazon on Twitter.

The petition, submitted to the UK Government and Parliament’s website, has reached more than 113,000 signatures so far.

Harwich Peninsula Friends of the Earth said on Twitter: “We helped.

“Thanks to the ones that voted.

“We are now at 160 Harwich and north Essex votes.”

It said it now wants to help take the voting to more than 200,000.

The petition’s description read: “The government of Brazil led by Bolsonaro favour the development of the Amazon rainforest over conservation, escalating deforestation.

“Deforestation threatens indigenous populations who live in the forest, loss of a precious and complex ecosystem and a vital carbon store that slows global warming.”

It added there is a climate change crisis and the intrinsic value of the Amazon rainforest should be recognised.

It added: “Indigenous people have called for the EU to impose trade sanctions on Brazil to halt the deforestation because they fear genocide.”

The House of Commons declined to comment.
