A THEATRE group from Cornwall will drop anchor at the Hythe in Maldon next week to stage a nautical-themed play on a converted barge.

Canvas and Rum, a seafaring tale from NorthSouth Theatre, promises four family-friendly evenings of sirens, shanties, superstitions and sea-sick sailors.

Set in the 19th century and inspired by real events, the play follows a rookie sailor aboard a whaling vessel heading from Falmouth to the New World.

Jason Gerdes, of NorthSouth Theatre, said: “One old sea dog who left Cornwall many years ago takes this newcomer under his wing and educates him in life on the open seas.

“When disaster strikes, the green-hand’s life is turned upside down and he has a promise to fulfil.

“Returning from Rio on a packet ship is a stark contrast to life on a whaler where he meets a mysterious woman and an eccentric biologist. As members of the crew, you will endure the infamous ‘crossing the line’ ceremony, pull the oars as the hunt begins, tie knots into the rigging and remember – don’t bring any rabbits on board!”

The production is currently on a nationwide tour, performing on a series of barges and tall ships at Padstow, Liverpool and London.

In Maldon, it will be staged on converted London tea barge the Resourceful.

Co-artistic director Steven Kelly said: “The four actors draw you into the show by immersing themselves within the audience.

“We encourage everyone to join in and be part of the crew, whether young or old. We are really looking forward to taking Canvas and Rum throughout the country and performing on board the individual ships and we hope everyone enjoys themselves. Oh, and did we mention the free tot of rum?”

The show runs in Maldon from August 7-10, at 7.30pm. For further information and ticket details, visit northsouththeatre.weebly.com or eventbrite.co.uk.
