A SISTER who trekked across Yorkshire in memory of her brother who took his own life has raised more than £2,000 for a mental health charity.

Tara Watson’s brother Adam Smith was just 30-years-old when he took his own life last January.

After taking some time to come to terms with what happened, she has been on a mission to raise awareness.

Tara, from New Town in Colchester, walked the three peaks in the Yorkshire Dales with her auntie Hazel Smith.

The 25-mile walk included a 1,600m incline and the duo completed the challenge within their goal of 12 hours.

Tara said: “The walk was extremely challenging and one of the hardest things we have both done.

“We completed the walk in just under 12 hours.

“We walked in fog, mist, bogs, sun and mud - the terrain made it a lot harder.

“We both had to push through the pain we felt to finish the walk and once we had completed the walk, we definitely had a cry.”

Adam, who was from Mersea, was sporty and Tara said he would have been impressed with his family’s achievement.

Tara added: “I think he would have been so proud of us both, neither of us had ever experienced a walk like it, but we turned up and gave it our all.

“He was definitely looking over us on that day.

“I’m so glad we both did this walk, not only to raise awareness, but the support we’ve had from family, friends and even people we’ve never met has just blown us away.

“Our whole team cheered us on during the walk and made sure we got to the finish line.

“It was an amazing feeling and we still can’t believe we have completed it.”

They have raised more than £2,000 so far.

All money raised will go to the Mid and North East Essex Mind mental health charity which is based in Colchester.
