STAFF at a fire hit oyster fishery say they have been "overwhelmed" by the support of customers, suppliers and friends.

A fire broke out at the Colchester Oyster Fishery in East Mersea around 9pm on Saturday, with the blaze damaging a large timber building.

A total of 17 calls were made to the fire service after flames could be seen from Brightlingsea, across the estuary.

Crews battled the fire for nearly two hours and police initially said it might be suspicious but later confirmed they did not believe this to be the case.

In a statement Colchester Oyster Fishery said it was open for business and thanked the "incredible fire services", adding "without their fast response, bravery and skill, we would be about to tell a very different story."

It added: "The fire took hold rapidly and destroyed the oyster room, our workshop, long room and offices above.

"Miraculously, the fire stopped there. The fire service worked quickly to contain the fire, limiting the damage to the building and our livelihood. Our lobster room, our outdoor tanks, freezers and chillers and sales offices have all survived.

"We have been overwhelmed by the support from our customers, suppliers and friends."
