THE countdown is on for one of Colchester’s biggest fundraising events.

There are four weeks left until the Race for Life event at Castle Park and for the first time Cancer Research UK is inviting men, women and children to take part.

Hundreds of runners are expected to pound the pavements on Sunday, July 14, and will remember loved ones lost to cancer.

The race also celebrates the lives of those who have survived cancer.

The Colchester race will be a 5k event in partnership with Tesco.

Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.

Emily Rowling, event manager for Race for Life in Colchester, said: “We’re making a final call to the people of Colchester to sign up today as their participation and contribution is so important.

“Every day around one in two people are diagnosed with cancer in Essex.

“That’s why we are calling on everyone of all ages to unite and help make a real difference.

“Our events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. You don’t need to be sporty to take part. You don’t have to train and you certainly don’t need to compete against anyone else.

“By taking part and raising money, participants will play a crucial role in helping turn discoveries into new, better treatments for patients.

“That’s why every person and every penny raised counts.”

To enter visit raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770. Entry is £14.99 per adult or £10 per child.

Children under six can race for free and will not need to register.
