THE DENGIE’S Doctor Dolittle is encouraging others to choose an exceptional member of their community for an award.

Fiona Oakes, of Bradwell, has taken part in some of the world’s toughest races to raise money for the 450 animals she cares for at Tower Hill Stables in the Dengie.

The 48-year-old won the Charity Champion category at the Amplifon Awards For Brave Britons and she is hoping another unsung hero can be nominated.

The awards celebrate the achievements of truly remarkable individuals from all walks of life.

Fiona said: “I was so excited when they announced my name as the winner.

“It was humbling and an honour to be nominated by someone I didn’t know.

“Bravery and courage should be recognised because it’s inspiring and encouraging to others.

“We need more pets and people to be honoured in the way, I was because there are a lot of pets and people out there who go beyond what is expected of them often for the sake of others.”

Mrs Oakes has taken part in the Marathon des Sales across the Sahara Desert, covering 154 miles, carrying her supplies on her back.

She holds several records including running six marathons in six days on six continents in 2015.

She set up her animal sanctuary, which has dogs, cats, sheep, cows and hens, in 1996.

Set up in honour of Amplifon’s founder, Second World War hero Major Algernon Charles Holland, the awards recognise the courage of special individuals.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Army and Navy Club in London on October 15.

The closing date for entries is August 2.
