A MAN has denied causing unnecessary suffering to a police dog and possession of cannabis following an incident in Colchester.

Colchester Magistrates' Court heard Niall Martin, 28, of Orchard Place, Chappel, is accused of choking the animal, pulling its jaw apart and slamming it against a vehicle during an incident in Blackthorn Avenue on January 23.

Martin denied both charges when he appeared in court on June 4.

He was granted unconditional bail and the case was adjourned to Colchester Magistrates' Court on September 9.
