The summer of fun in Colchester’s Castle Park starts in earnest this weekend with superstar Craig David performing this Sunday but here are some other top events to get excited about in the park this year

1. Pipes in the Park, June 9, 10am to 5pm. Free.

Formerly known as Scotland in Colchester, pipe bands from all over southern England will be competing in a mini Highland Gathering. Highland dancers add to the Scottish atmosphere plus there will also be a display from the Corps of Drums from King Edward’s Grammar School Combined Cadet Force.

2. Colchester Medieval Festival and Oyster Fayre Market, June 15 and 16, 10am to 5pm. £8, £4 children, £16 family.

A real family treat with Medieval stalls selling all sorts of wonderful historic crafts, entertainers from the period plus story tellers and music wafting from every corner. Don’t forget the food court with Medieval and modern delicacies plus The Pikestaff Inn selling real ale, mead and wines.

3. Summer Screen, July 1 to 14. colchester-events.co.uk/event/summerscreen

An annual treat that intersperses the screening of the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament, films being shown this year are; Grease, A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, a Fantastic Beasts Double Bill, and The Incredibles.

4. Tears For Fears, ABC, July 28, gates 4pm. Tickets from £32.50.

Everybody wants to be in the park for this throwback to the Eighties as the acclaimed duo bring their extensive catalogue of hits in what promises to be an incredible evening of music, especially as they’re being joined by another iconic band from the decade, ABC.

5. The Gift, September 3 to 14 (excluding Mondays and Sundays), 8pm. £12, £10 concessions. 01206 500900.

The debut production for Castle Park Theatre sees a new promenade play based on the real life events surrounding the restoration of Colchester Castle in Georgian times, which takes place around the historic site itself. Definitely one that’s not to be missed.
