A MAN arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman reported she was sexually attacked has been released on bail.

A passerby called the police early on Saturday morning after a woman in her 20s told him she had been raped in George Street, Colchester.

Police cordoned off the area and launched an investigation.

Later that day a man, aged 21, was arrested on suspicion of rape and theft.

Essex Police have confirmed the man has now been bailed until April 13.

The victim is receiving support from specially trained officers.

In the hours after the incident Det Chief Insp Rob Huddleston moved to reassure the public that incidents like this were extremely rare and urged people to continue with their usual routines.

Police are still appealing for witnesses.
