LIGHTS at a busy roundabout and near a town station will be repaired as a matter of urgency.

Councillor Lee Scordis (Lab) reported a number of broken street lights around the St Botolph’s roundabout in Colchester.

A number of others at Colchester Town train station were also reported.

Mr Scordis was worried commuters would feel unsafe walking around the area and were facing the risk of a fall, or they feel unsafe.

“When you come out of the station none of the street lights are working, the whole area is pitch black and it’s the same coming out of the magistrates’ court,” he said.

“It’s not nice coming home from work. Also the path outside the magistrates’ court is in a complete state, there are paving slabs all over the place.

“So not only is it pitch black, it’s dangerous.

“There are about ten lights out, they said they would fix them within two weeks but that must have been about two weeks ago now.

“I haven’t seen any emergency crews out.”

A spokesperson for Essex Highways said the lights are due to be repaired in the this week.

He said: “These are important lights at a busy roundabout, so although there is light from others nearby, this one is a priority for us and has been issued to the crew for repairs to be carried out.

“We started with testing on-site on Thursday.

“If the fault is simply broken bulbs we will plan the necessary traffic management for safety and carry out the bulb replacement.

“If there is a power supply cable fault it might take a little longer.”

The spokesman said the county council was not aware of any urgent safety issues regarding the pavements.

He added: “If anyone does have a concern over a specific defect, would they please log the fault online at www.essex.gov.uk/highways or if dangerous now please phone it through on the emergency number on the website.

“We respond urgently to make safe any paving slabs or other issues which are a significant safety risk.

“With other faults that are not safety-critical, we try to batch them together for repairs to avoid repeatedly disrupting traffic and pedestrians in this busy area.”

A spokeswoman for Greater Anglia said the broken lights outside Colchester Town station have been replaced with new LED lights.
