THOUSANDS of people flocked to Colchester High Street for a day of festive fun as a Christmas market returned to the town.

The road was closed as about

100 traders sold food, crafts and toys.

Organised by Colchester Council with support from Food and Drink Festivals UK, there was something for everyone with Yorkshire puddings, Caribbean food and burritos available for hungry shoppers.

Children could also enjoy funfair rides, a hall of mirrors, and storytelling from Footprints Street Theatre.

Singers and musicians from across the area kept crowds entertained but the guest of honour on the day was, of course, Santa Claus himself.

Martin Goss, councillor responsible for waste, environment and transportation, said: “It was great to see the Christmas market attract thousands to the historic High Street and help visitors get into the festive mood with live music, children’s activities, funfair rides and some delicious street food.

“Our Christmas market gets bigger and better each year and has become a great occasion to welcome new traders to the town centre, offering different shopping experiences and help boost local businesses in the run-up to the festive period.”
