RURAL crime is a big deal for people living in the towns and villages of the Dengie.

In October alone we have reported on five break-ins at businesses.

Last week three firms were targeted in a spate of crime.

The crooks were indiscriminate in both who they targeted and what they took.

In two cases at pubs the thieves got away with nothing after being disturbed.

The actions of brave pub workers prevented potentially thousands of pounds in cash - the livelihoods of people in our community - being taken.

Essex Police says patrols in areas where there have been commercial burglaries will increase.

But for the people living, and running businesses, in these areas it can feel like they are being abandoned.

Often miles from the nearest police station, they can feel as if they are cut off.

They need to see police on the streets and bringing culprits to justice to allay their fears.

The latest police figures show fewer burglaries are taking place - but those on the Dengie might disagree.
