AN historic Harwich pub dating back to 1753 is set to be added to the register of Assets of Community Value.

The Globe Inn, in Castlegate Street, has been running for 265 years - making it one of the oldest still-trading pubs in the town.

The Tendring branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) nominated the Grade II listed pub to be listed by Tendring Council as an Asset of Community Value.

Assets of Community Value have a mandatory moratorium on being sold by their owners, of up to six months, to allow community groups time to build up a bid to buy the properties.

However, there is no right of any community group to automatically buy them, or have first refusal.

To qualify a building must further the social wellbeing or the social interests of the community, or have done in the past and have the potential to in the future.

In its application CAMRA said the pub met the criteria not only through being a pub with pool, dart and crib teams, but by holding regular fundraisers and being part of wider events such as the Ale Trail, Sea Shanty Festival and Sea Festival.

Tendring CAMRA also indicated it would look to bid to buy the pub if it came onto the market through a community interest group.

Tendring Council's cabinet agreed to add The Globe Inn to the register of Assets of Community Value at its meeting on Friday, October 12.
