A SCHEME to mark the centenary of the Great War has been set up in Tolleshunt D’Arcy.

St. Nicholas Primary School and the parish council have worked together to mark 100 years since the First World War.

Headteacher Louise Eastbrook said: “The children have decorated the Maypole with poppies and created a wall of remembrance in the school library.

“Each class went away to make their own poppies.

“We have paper ones, laminated ones and clay ones. It is a poignant image that will have a real significance to the children.

“We’ve also made a wall with the names of the soldiers we lost in our town.

“It’s good because the children have seen the name of some of the soldiers and recognised the names.

“We will do more things closer to the time. But this has been a good project for the children to be involved in.

“A big thank you to all the staff and children for their hard work and enthusiasm.”

This effort was thanks to the help of parish council chairman John Smith.

Mr Smith came to the school and gave an assembly on the importance of Remembrance.

He said: “I was very pleased to see how involved the school children were in marking the centenary.

“Their memorials and the silhouette give the parish a focal point for the centenary.

“Involving them ensures that the Remembrance will continue for generations to come.”
