LABOUR Party members had eggs thrown at them during a campaign in Colchester High Street.

The Colchester Labour Group were out campaigning in the town’s high street on Saturday following the Labour Party’s annual conference in Liverpool this week.

During the day, the group were victims of an egging, with some residents throwing eggs at the campaigners and stands.

Deputy Leader of Colchester Borough Council Tim Young, who also leads the Labour Group in Colchester, tweeted out that his campaigners had been attacked.

He wrote: “Campaigning in the High Street. We are obviously having an effect because we got egged. I blame the Tories!”

The group carried on campaigning for the afternoon despite the attack, which was condemned on social media.

The attack also drew criticism from Will Quince, Conservative MP for Colchester, who said abuse against peaceful political campaigners should not be tolerated.

He wrote: “However damaging or dangerous you think a Labour government would be for Colchester or how much you disapprove of our Labour run council, there is no excuse for egging their street stall.

“I’m glad no-one was hurt in this incident.”
