KIND-HEARTED residents have been decorating war memorials in Heybridge.

Jackie Wilson and Sue Gee have, of their own accord, been out decorating the commemorative bench at the Heybridge Cenotaph with the names of those who fell in the First World War who were from the village.

Jackie and Sue also decorated the parish council's "Tommy" statue outside of Plantation Hall with 100 poppies, to mark the centenary since the Great War's end.

The Tommies have been sent around the district to stand for 100 days, up until Remembrance Sunday on November 11.

A spokesman for Heybridge Parish Council said: "The ladies did this with no prompting from the council, and it was a lovely surprise when we came across Jackie's post on Facebook showing the work they had done.

"The Tommies have been a wonderful edition and a great mark of respect to our fallen soldiers, it's great to see people love them so much they want to make them look even better.
