ANTI-SPEED campaigners have reported almost 300 motorists to the police in just one month.

The Frinton and Walton branch of Speedwatch has caught 292 speeding motorists in the area which have been travelling at speeds of up to 55mph miles per hour in 30mph miles per hour zones.

Co-ordinator Mick Carter said the worst dangerous areas for speeding are across Walton Road, Thorpe Road and Little Clacton Road.

“The Speedwatch group has been going for years and over the last month we’ve reported 292 motorists speeding in the Frinton and Walton area,” he said.

“In the past year we’ve reported 2,000 motorists for exceeding the 30mph miles per hour speed limit.

“They have all received a warning letter from the police.

“The police have also been using the TruCam which has been successful in sending people on speed awareness courses.

“WThe only thing is we can’t report anyone for speeding unless they’re going 36mph miles per hour but we see people going 45mph miles per hour in built-up residential areas.”

Mr Carter says that as the summer draws in cases of speeding will increase into summer as the evenings get longer and the amount of day-trippers in the area increases.

“If I’m outside in the garden on an evening, that’s when I see and hear all of the speeders – they all seem to be going to Walton,” he said.

“I’m amazed at the speed these motorists go – it’s very dangerous.”

Mr Carter and his core group of 14 volunteers are on the look-out for new volunteers to tackle the amount of speeding in the area.

“We do about ten Speedwatch sessions a month and are doing very well at the moment,” he added.

“We are always looking for new volunteers and always need more people.

“If people do want to join they would only need to dedicate about four hours of their time per month.”
