Rail passengers travelling to and from Stansted Airport are facing major disruption after a crash at a major train station led to train cancellations and delays.

The issue has affected services running between London Liverpool Street and Hackney Downs, with disruption expected to continue until the end of the day.

Platforms 1 and 2 at London Liverpool Street have been closed, leading to significant changes across several routes, including the Stansted Express and services to Cambridge North, Ely, and Hertford East.

It comes after a train collided with a buffer stop at the station yesterday.

Rory O’Neill, TfL’s general manager for London Overground, yesterday said: “An out of service London Overground train was involved in a low-speed collision with a buffer stop at Liverpool Street station at around 1am yesterday morning.

"The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

"They have since been released.

"A full investigation is now taking place to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "Network Rail are looking at what work is required to re-open the platforms."

With fewer platforms available, some trains are being diverted to Stratford or are terminating early at Bishops Stortford.

Passengers travelling to or from London Liverpool Street are being advised to expect delays.

Greater Anglia has advised that tickets will be valid on earlier or later trains if a service is cancelled or finishes early.

Passengers delayed by more than 15 minutes are eligible to claim compensation through the Delay Repay scheme.

Greater Anglia and Network Rail said: "We are sorry if your journey has been affected by this disruption."

Travellers are encouraged to use Greater Anglia’s live departure boards for real-time updates.

JourneyCheck and the Greater Anglia live map are also available for the latest service information.

Passengers holding advance purchase tickets will be permitted to travel on an alternative service if their booked train is cancelled.
