A HALSTEAD community marathon has been recognised at the England Athletics Regional Awards.
The Halstead and Essex Marathon, organised by the Halstead Road Runners, was named Community Project of the Year at an awards ceremony near Bury St Edmunds.
The marathon has been a fixture for 29 years, raising money for schools and charities while promoting inclusivity and community spirit.
Despite post-pandemic challenges, volunteers brought the marathon back to life.
The Halstead Road Runners dedicated a free race place to an asylum seeker named Mohamed, who went on to win the race and set a new course record.
The marathon is designed to be affordable and accessible, welcoming runners of all ages and abilities.
Last year, the event raised £500 for charity with the help of 200 volunteers.
A spokesperson for the club said: "We are a very small club and this is a very big event to take on.
"We call on other clubs in the area and people within the community.
"The marshals are very enthusiastic!"
The England Athletics Regional Awards ceremony took place at The Ravenswood Hotel and celebrated the contributions of 20 volunteers, clubs, and projects.

Matthew Dalton, England Council chairman, said: "If we didn't have the coaches, officials and club volunteers behind the scenes this sport will fall apart.
"So, a huge thanks to all our volunteers."
The event was attended by England Athletics chief executive Chris Jones, member-elected board director Clive Poyner, and regional council members.
