A LARGE hole opened up in a Halstead road following a water leak in the area.

Part of Mitchell Avenue had to be shut following the incident.

Teams from Anglian Water were reportedly at the scene yesterday.

The leaking water caused the road to become severely icy due to the cold weather hitting the county today.

Speaking to the Halstead Gazette, one resident said: “I was walking my dog yesterday when I saw a hole in the ground and water was flowing out of it.

“Anglian Water looked like they were on the scene trying to figure it out.

“I didn’t expect to see a huge crater in the road this morning, though.

“It seems a bit dangerous to be left overnight especially with the amount of ice that the water leak caused.”

The Anglian Water website was showing the issue has been logged as a leak, with repair work in progress.

“We're sorry it's taking longer than expected to resolve this issue. We're working hard to make sure this is done as quickly as possible,” a statement said.

A spokesman for Anglian Water said: “Our teams have repaired a burst water main on Mitchell Avenue in Halstead.

"Now the repair is complete, we just need to make the road safe to drive and walk on again.

"In order to keep our engineers and other road users safe while we work in this cold and icy weather, we’ve needed to close Mitchell Road.

"We’d like to thank our customers in Halstead for bearing with us while we get things back to normal.”
