THE new boss of a much-loved theatre wants to ensure it is "still here in the next ten years” and usher in an exciting community-focused era for the venue.

Jo Collis, 43, officially stepped into the role of chairman at Halstead's  Empire Theatre, in Butler Road, this month and has promised to turn the venue into a “community hub”.

The Halstead resident of three years moved to the area with her husband who grew up in the town, and joined the Empire as a volunteer after her husband “raved” about going to it as a child with his grandmother.

Jo saw the venue issue a post about needing more volunteers and decided it was the perfect way to make friends, and started volunteering there in June 2021.

Fast forward to October 2023 when her predecessor Mike George made the decision to step down from the position and after a transitional period, Jo has started 2024 as the chairman and says she is up to the challenge.

She said: “It is a challenge. There is a lot of work taking on a massive role like this, but I have the backing of a great team, not just the executives but all our volunteers as well.

“I think going forward it will be great.

“I would like to thank Mike for all the hard work he has put in over the years and I am happy to take over the reins and move forward into the future."

Prior to her appointment, Jo was as a projectionist.

Now she works with her executive team made up of vice chair Valerie Fawkes, secretary Layla Crowe, volunteer rep Julie Spears and treasurer Jayne Djidelli.

Cinema lover Jo has an eclectic taste ranging from sci-fi epics such as Star Wars and Blade Runner to comedy flicks such as Pitch Perfect.

She is feeling optimistic about the future.

She said: “I really want to make the Empire Theatre a hub for the local community, and for it to be an asset in Halstead.

“I want to make sure it is still there in ten years’ time.

“I want to focus on engaging with the community. I want people to know we are here, that people can have a night out at the Empire Theatre, and more.”

Heading into 2024, Jo has promised a “full book” at the venue, including film showings, live music tribute acts ranging from Queen to Robbie Williams, and an array of stand-up comedians.

In the October half term, Jo also hopes to put on a singing competition for children aged eight to 18 years old, whilst also providing other forms of entertainment for youngsters.
