A PRIMARY school has earned a prestigious award thanks to its pupils' environmentally-friendly efforts.

The pupils of de Vere Primary School, in Kirby Hall Road, Castle Hedingham, have earned the prized Eco-Schools Green Flag for their hard work.

Youngsters formed an eco-committee and with the help of a coordinator and carried out an environmental review to assess how environmentally-friendly de Vere Primary School is.

During the review they looked at the school grounds, how pupils and teachers travel to school, and once they conducted their research planned a year’s worth of activities to improve the school’s eco efforts.

From there, the pupils carried out a variety of projects related to biodiversity, waste and healthy living.

They developed an eco-friendlier travel plan, carried out wildlife surveys and asked the school and pupils to re-use rather than throw away.

Eco-Schools spokesman Adam Flint said: “The Eco-Schools Green Flag award is an internationally recognised symbol of high environmental standards.

“The pupils and school staff that earn the award deserve immense credit for their hard work, determination and creativity.

“Their passion for protecting our planet is an inspiration to us all.”

The Eco-Schools programme was founded in 1994 and is a simple, step-by-step framework which has helped more than 70 schools in the UK become more eco-friendly.

The framework covers ten topics related to how schools can tackle climate change and actively protect the planet, such as biodiversity, energy, litter and waste.

This achievement comes after the school received a ‘good’ rating from Ofsted, in September.
