A QUIZ night is being held this weekend as a fundraiser for new church bells continues.

St Andrew’s Church, in Earls Colne, needs to raise tens of thousands of pounds to get its bells restored.

The bells were originally installed about 150 years ago and are in need of re-tuning and putting back with new fittings and working parts.

The church is trying to raise between £60,000 and £70,000 to get the bells completely refurbished.

The total is now more than £20,000 after ongoing efforts over the past couple of years.

This year, the bell fund has seen several large personal donations and other grants from local community funds.

These include £750 from Eastlight, £500 from Blackwell through the Corporate Social Responsibility Fund for Blackwell’s parent company Hargreaves Services, and £500 from the Essex Community Foundation.

Now, the team are holding a quiz night this weekend.

Trevor Beadle, from Earls Colne, is the tower captain with the church bellringers.

He said: “The Earls Colne bellringers will be holding a fundraising quiz on Saturday, October 21.

“Last year's quiz was a great success, and the ringers are hoping for another good turnout to support them in their efforts to raise around £70,000 to restore the bells at St Andrew's.

“Fundraising started in December 2021, and they have already raised in excess of £20,000.”

Tickets for the quiz are £6 per person and are available from Ziel, Fork 'Andles and the Refillery in Earls Colne, or by contact the bell fund via their Facebook page at facebook.com/earlscolnebells.

The quiz is being held at the village hall in Earls Colne.

Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Quizzers should take their own drinks and snacks.
