A VILLAGE bowls club saw success in an annual competition as it raised thousands for charity.

Castle Hedingham Bowls Club held its charity day at the weekend.

The event raised funds for St Nicholas' Hospice and Little Haven Children’s Hospice by inviting teams from all over the country to come and take part.

Clubs came from as far away as Mundford, in Norfolk, to compete for the Lionel Brown Charity Cup.

A total of 20 teams took part on the day.

Chairman Garry Southgate was delighted with the event’s success.

He said: “We do it every year in aid of Lionel Brown, one of the founding members of the club. His daughter and husband are members of the club too.

“In the past, we have done it for various charities, but we always try and do it for some which are linked.

“One of our members does voluntary work for St Nicolas' Hospice and it was from there we decided to raise extra funds for a children’s hospice too.

“Funds were raised through donations from our sponsors Heritage estate agents and County Broadband along with our barbecue, raffles and tombola.

“This enabled Castle Hedingham Bowls Club to present each charity a cheque for £850.

“It is great we were able to do that, as in the past we’ve only managed to raise it for one charity, and we are a small village bowls club so to raise something that substantial is great.

“The day was a great success and resulted in a win for a team from Castle Hedingham and a good result for two very worthy charities.”
