A BIG-HEARTED publican has raised more than £5,000 for charity after hosting a sponsored football tournament.

Graham Bedford is licensee of the Bell Inn, in Panfield, near Braintree.

He has raised £5,040 for Macmillan Cancer Support by hosting a Greene King Carling Cup football tournament.

The publican, whose pub boasts a full-size football pitch, worked with pub owner Greene King and Carling beer to make the tournament happen.

In total,10 teams took part in the tournament, ranging from Greene King and Carling members of staff to regulars of the pub.

After seven matches, a team comprising of staff from drinks supplier Diageo lifted cup in a thrilling final.

The tournament was made possible after support from Greene King and sponsorship from Carling, who provided a bar along with football kits, pitch boards, a mural and gazebos with stadia seating to make the final experience feel just like a professional football match.

Coca Cola also supported the day by providing complimentary soft drinks for all the players and volunteers involved in the tournament.

A charity auction was also held at the end of the tournament to top up the amount fundraised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mr Bedford said: “It’s been a pleasure to host the ‘Greene King Carling Cup’ and raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“Thank you to James at Greene King and the team at Carling for making this tournament possible!”

James Pearson, Business Development Manager for Greene King Pub Partners added: “We had a great day playing a really fun football tournament, but more importantly we raised £5,040 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“A big well done to Graham for organising the tournament and thank you to Carling for helping us make it happen.”

Laura Wedd, Brand Manager for Carling, said: “Thanks to James at Greene King and Graham at the Bell for letting us be involved in supporting such fantastic fundraising.

“Carling are proud to support Greene King’s charity partners and it was great bringing back the famous Carling Cup for this special event.”
