AN amateur theatre group is preparing to perform its first production since the pandemic broke out.

The Bardfield Players are staging A Bunch of Amateurs by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman.

The Great Bardfield-based group are are excited to be treading the boards again.

The plot sees a star actor duped into performing with an am-dram group.

A spokesman said: “Keen to boost his flagging career, fading Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steele arrives in England to play King Lear in Stratford – only to find that this is not the birthplace of the Bard, but a sleepy Suffolk village.

“And instead of Kenneth Branagh and Dame Judy Dench, the cast are a bunch of amateurs trying to save their theatre from developers.

“Jefferson's monstrous ego, vanity and insecurity are tested to the limit by the enthusiastic am-dram thespians.

“As acting worlds collide and Jefferson's world implodes, he discovers some truths about himself – along with his inner Lear."

The Bardfield Players usually aim to put on two shows a year.

The spokesman said: “This will be the first play that we have been able to put on for the past two and a half years.

“We are all very excited by it and look forward to performing to a full house once again.”

A Bunch of Amateurs is at Great Bardfield Town Hall from May 19-21 at 8pm, and tickets are available for £8.50 from ticketsource.co.uk/bardfield-players.
