A ROCK choir is set to perform at a theatre to raise funds for its work in the community.

Braintree Rock Choir will be joining other rock choir groups to sing at Colchester’s Mercury Theatre.

The first Rock Choir was launched in Farnham, Surrey, in 2005, by award-winning musician and singer Caroline Redman Lusher with just 70 members.

Now it has more than 32,000 members participating in about 400 communities.

Adam Abo Henriksen has been Braintree Rock Choir’s leader for six years.

They are part of a large group heading to the Mercury to perform on Saturday, and will be joined by choirs from Colchester, Chelmsford, Dunmow and Sudbury, which will make up about 110 singers on the night.

Adam said: “We did a show in 2019, just before the Mercury shut for its renovation, and it was a great event.

“As it was the last concert before the refurbishment, it was a big fundraiser concert and last push to help with the renovation costs.

“Since then my Colchester choir has moved to the Mercury, where we rehearse on a weekly basis.

“We are really looking forward to this show, and it is another fundraiser for the theatre.

“Rock Choir in general has lots of ages. Even those who haven’t sung before very quickly start to sound like a choir – it’s amazing the improvements people make so quickly.

“This also gives the choir a great chance to perform on a big stage and get back to where we were pre-pandemic.”

A spokesman for the Mercury Theatre said: “Following their amazing sell-out success in 2019 the Rock Choir returns with their eclectic mix of upbeat favourites and sing-along classics to get you up on your feet.

“It will featuring a variety of your favourite rock hits sung by Essex and Suffolk locals.

“The proceeds from this feel-good fundraiser will support the Mercury and all the work it does in the local community.”

The show is this Saturday, starting at 7.30pm for approximately two and a half hours.

Tickets are £15 and can be bought at mercurytheatre.co.uk/event/ rock-choir/#book.
