COUNCIL bosses have revealed why they refused a large housing development, in line with their environmental ambitions.

Braintree Council has stated its rejection of a 90 homes bid was due to concerns about the harm to the character and appearance of the countryside.

The plans by Gladman Developments detailed 90 homes to be built in Black Notley, Braintree.

Blueprints were submitted to the council’s planning team for the site in December 2020.

The refusal of the proposed development has since been upheld by the Planning Inspectorate, and has been supported by Witham MP Priti Patel, and the council itself.

Braintree Council planning boss Gabrielle Spray said: “I am pleased the inspector dismissed Gladman’s speculative development on the grounds that it would adversely affect the character and appearance of the area and conflict with national and local planning policies.

“This result is the best outcome for the residents of Black Notley and we will continue to fight against unsuitable, unsustainable and poorly designed developments to protect the whole district, which is an important consideration reflected in our existing and emerging local plans.”

As part of its climate change strategy to be carbon neutral by 2030, Braintree Council has said it will continue to work with developers to ensure new developments fit in with and enhance the natural environment, helping to reduce the carbon impact and improve biodiversity.
